Vegetable Chapathi

Looking for a tasty way to add vegetables to your kid’s diet? Try out these vegetable chapathis, made with wheat flour, gram flour and a variety of vegetables like carrot, cabbage, beans, potato !

When I got this recipe from my Mom, I was wondering if I will be able to really pack all the vegetables into a Chapathi dough, but it turned out to be successful and yummy 😊 I followed my Mom’s tip to use gingelly oil or sesame oil while making the chapathis and that way I was able to get the round shape and the roti dough was not that sticky.

Makes around: 15-16 chapathis

Ingredients

  • Half a capsicum, finely chopped
  • 1 cup carrot, finely chopped
  • 1 cup cabbage, finely chopped
  • 7-8 medium size beans, finely chopped
  • 1 potato, peeled and finely chopped
  • 1 sprig curry leaves finely chopped
  •
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chilly powder
  • 1 1/2 cups wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup gram flour
  • Salt, to taste
  • Gingelly oil or sesame oil for making the dough
  • Ghee – 1 tsp for sautéing

Method

  • Heat the ghee in a pan and add the cumin powder and red chilly powder
  • Add the capsicum and sauté for few minutes
  • Add the remaining vegetables, salt and sauté for a couple of minutes
  • Cover the pan and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring at regular intervals
  • Keep the vegetable mixture aside for cooling
  •
  • Mix the gram flour, wheat flour, salt, a little gingelly oil and mix well. I used a food processor in pulse mode for making the dough
  • Add spoonfuls of the  vegetable mixture and blend well until the dough comes together. You can add water to aid the process, but try to add as less water as possible as the vegetable will ooze out their natural juice too. I used around 1/4 cup of water
  • Dust a plate or surface with flour and roll in the dough into a ball, using some additional gingelly oil
  •
  • Keep the dough covered for sometime
  • Divide the dough into equal parts and roll out as chapathis using some extra flour and gingelly oil to ease the process of making the round shape
  • Heat a tava and cook both sides of the chapathi. You can use a little oil or ghee to grease the chapathis

Serve hot with yogurt, raita or any subzi of your choice. This Chapathi tastes good with just yogurt as well 😊

Some variations that you can try out:

  • Add onions while sautéing the vegetables
  • Replace 1/2 cup cabbage with cauliflower
