Vegetable Idly Waffle


Have some left over idly batter? Looking for a new recipe to make your lil one eat veggies? Well, try idly waffles :), ready in few minutes. This was my Mom-in-law’s suggestion and turned out really yummy. My toddler loved it too. You can enjoy the idly waffle with molaga podi or chutney 🙂 and your lil toddler can have it just like that 😊


  • Idly batter – 3 cups
  • Salt, chilli powder to taste
  • 1/4 cup cooked mixed vegetables (beans, carrots and peas)
  • Optional, gingelly oil to drizzle over the waffles


  1. Cook the mixed vegetables well and keep aside
  2. Combine the vegetables, idly batter, salt and chilli powder to make a smooth batter
  3. Heat your waffle maker and follow the instructions to make the waffle. I use a cuisinart waffle maker and these are the steps I follow:
    • Preheat the waffle maker and wait until the green light turns on
    • Pour 2 ladles of the batter in the center and close the lid of the waffle maker ( The batter spreads itself pretty well, I don’t need to spread it before hand with a spatula ).
      • Note: For one of the waffles, I drizzled some gingelly oil on top of the waffle before cooking it, and it tasted like a crisp vegetable dosa 🙂
    • Choose the desired browning setting and wait for the green light to turn on again (Note: Sometimes your waffle may need a longer time to cook, you might need to repeat the above steps and probably wait for 2 rounds)

Enjoy the idly waffle with a hot cup of filter coffee and kick start your morning 🙂 Of course when serving to your toddler they can enjoy it with their morning milk for breakfast
