Rava Idiyappam (String-hoppers)

An alternative way to make the delicious idiyappam. These  rava idiyappams are easy to make and as tasty as the rice version.

Source of recipe: One of my mom’s collections, by chef Usha Bail

Ingredients:

  • Rava – 3 cups
  • Water – 4 cups
  • Ghee – 2 tbsp
  • Salt – 1 1/4 tsp

Method:

  • Boil water, salt and ghee together
  • When water boils, reduce the flame and slowly add the rava, stirring all the time so that no lumps are formed
  • When all the water evaporates, and the mixture becomes dry, remove it from fire and let it cool
  • Once it cools down, make into balls and pass each ball through an idiyappam machine to make round idiyappams
    • Note: The original recipe instructed to first steam the balls on an idly plate and then pass through the idiyappam machine. But when I tried it out, I found that I need to place it in the idly cooker again after passing through the idiyappam machine. Hence I would suggest that you directly pass through the idiyappam machine and then steam it
  • Steam the idiyappam in an idly cooker for 15-20 minutes ( the time may be different depending on the idly cooker that you are using. If you use a microwave idly cooker, you only need to steam for 5-7 minutes)

Enjoy the delicious idiyappam with stew or mor kuzhambu and papad
